The siding of your home provides an aesthetic appeal as well as a practical application, insulating your home from the outside world. There are four different types of siding for your home that are the most common, all of which offer different benefits and drawbacks over each other. Understanding the different types of siding available can make it easier for you to choose which type of siding works best for you.

Wood Siding

Wood siding is the most traditional type of siding, and can be found on older and historical houses. Wood siding tends to be relatively inexpensive in price, and lends a classical and natural look to your house. It comes in a wide variety of styles and different stains and colours, which makes it easy for you to find something that matches your home. However, wood siding is susceptible to rot and water damage, and can warp over time due to exposure to weather conditions. It is also difficult to install on already installed siding, and does require fairly constant maintenance to prevent peeling and rotting.

Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding offers a very low maintenance option for your house's siding. It comes in a wide variety of different colours and styles, and as such it is very easy to match aluminum siding to your house's already existing aesthetic. It tends to be more expensive than wood siding, but not significantly so, and is much more durable. As it is made out of metal, it can withstand a great deal more damage than wood siding, and will not need to be repainted or stained like wood siding needs to be. However, it can become dented due to hail or a collision.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding presents a low cost, low maintenance option. It can come in any colour or design imaginable, as it is made out of plastic, and can be easily and cheaply coloured. It can be easily applied over already existing siding, and needs no maintenance besides power washing if dirt or grime gets on it. However, vinyl siding is prone to cracking in cold weather, and it can warp or buckle over time due to weather exposure.

Cement Fiber Siding

Cement fiber siding is a fairly new siding option, and offers high durability with no maintenance. However, cement fiber siding can be quite expensive, often costing more than any other siding option. However, it cannot rot or be damaged very easily, and is installed exactly like wood siding is installed. Made out of recylcable materials, cement fiber siding is the most environmentally friendly siding option available from places like Onit Roofing & Exteriors Inc.
